Update:
This week I finished another skein of yarn, I've got a total of three done now. I feel like it's coming along, I did realize I was going to have to do more than just a couple rows if I want to get this done by the end of the semester. I have really started to enjoy this pattern and I am no longer having to go back and recount every stitch to make sure it's correct. I hoping to have another skien of yarn done by next week.

Looking at transactional nature between me and my new found occupation of crocheting I feel that it has been improving. I've been using crocheting as a stress relief to remove myself from a situation while doing something productive. It also helps me feel a little more at home in a place I haven't been for long because it brings back good memories.
Self-knowledge, Self-esteem, Self-perception, and/or Self Awareness:
For this week I feel that self-esteem and self-awareness all played role in helping me choose this occupation. I had already had some prior knowledge of crocheting beforehand, but it was the simple aspects like how to begin a chain as well as a single stitch, I had no idea what other kind of stitches there were. Self-esteem played a role because of the prior knowledge I had even though it wasn't much, I pretty much told myself that I could do it and had nothing to worry about because even if I were to mess up I could take it out and retry it. Self-awareness played a role in it too because I knew that reflecting on what I had done, my thoughts during the process, and emotions throughout would help be better develop my skills and look at it in a bigger picture.
Servant, Recruiter, and Mirror:
Looking at a perspective of occupation as a servant, crocheting is a lot of doing and fills quite a bit of time. It has brought about meaning since I started crocheting because of the past I've had with it. Looking at it in the perspective of recruiter, crocheting doesn't have the most benefits and can contribute to back pain, sometimes arthritis in the wrist and fingers due to the constant movement of the two. But, it is also a good release of tension on a bad day because it takes a lot of focus. Looking at is in the perspective of a mirror, I feel that I am still working on that aspect because it's something I define myself with, if it was something that I would continuously do it would be a little different.
Hey Tristin! Crocheting is such a creative occupation and it sounds like you are doing really well at it! I really like your reflection on how crocheting fits into your life now. You gave a balanced description of how it is a servant, recruiter, and mirror especially since you talked about how while there can be negatives from this occupation, there are many positives as well. I am excited to see how you progress with the blanket throughout the semester. While crocheting may not be something you define yourself by, do you think it acts as a mirror to show other aspects of your personality? With my new occupation, I don't define myself by being a kombucha brewer, but it does reflect my value for creativity and making things from scratch.
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie,
DeleteI didn't really look at mirror that way, but I am glad that you brought it up. I think that it can reflect parts of my personality, I love to make things from scratch too because to me it gives more value to it, even though it can be hard sometimes. It also allows me to show my creativity while also showing my quiet side too.
Hi Tristin, this is Melanie. It's exciting to see your progress on your project! It looks super comfy! I've always wanted to learn how to crochet. I do know how to knit, though, and it can be super relaxing once you get going on a project. I've never done something as big as a blanket because I like being able to see my progress, and blankets are so big that it doesn't ever seem like I'm making progress, but you're accomplishing a lot with your crocheting. It's nice to hear that your crocheting is helping you feel more at home in a new place. Can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDeleteHi Melanie,
DeleteI've always wanted to learn to knit just never got to it. I am hoping that I wasn't too ambitious with deciding to do a blanket over starting small, I kinda threw myself into it. Thanks for commenting!
Tristin,
ReplyDeleteI am happy that you are finally beginning to receive stress relief from crocheting. I think that the closer you get to and the more you start receiving from your new occupation the more you will gain as a person. I know from my own experience, that crocheting is an extremely hard tasks to learn but it can be extremely rewarding. Knowing that this is a challenging task the reward is that much better because you have placed so much work into it. I believe this is the where the transactional relationship occurs. Do you think you will ever gain more then just stress relief from your new occupation?
Erin
Hi Erin,
DeleteI think that over time I won't just crochet because of the stress relief it gives, but also because I enjoy doing it. Right now it's more of a must because it's for an assignment rather than for myself. I think that once I am able to do it on my on accord it will become a more enjoyable occupation.
